released rippin up sound!
2015-08-05T00:00:00+00:00
http://www.leondustar.nl/2015/08/05/released-rippin-up-sound

Its a fact!
My track ‘rippin up sound’ was released on my own record label
Du Star Funk
.
Its available at several online stores like beatport, itunes, spotify and other exotic platforms.

This song was mostly made with the awesome free buze with these ingredients:

5 liters of funk

a teaspoon of hiphop lyrics (‘rippin up sound’)

3 kg of loop startpoint-madness (check the buildup) using
btdsys stutter
buzz-plugin

4 spoons of funk synthrecordings I did on my yamaha dx27

some nice compressors like ‘lunar compressor2’ built by ld0d

snappy hihats which turn into whitenoise thanks to ld0d’s ‘ld hihat’

New funk livejam
2015-05-19T00:00:00+00:00
http://www.leondustar.nl/2015/05/19/new-funk-live-jam

This is my most recent funk explosion on the Electribe.
After years of funk and house, I still can’t get enough of those minimal grooves with carefully placed funkstabs.

I hope this gets our juices flowing as well!

Live

All sounds come directly from one hardware sampler (the electribe ESX).
This is how music was made back in the past..and present!
No laptop, no external fx, no eq, no plugins.
Just a pair of FUNK ears & hands.

liveset at kuplung

http://www.leondustar.nl/2015/05/18/liveset-at-kuplung-was-great

Here’s the recording of a liveset i did in Budapest/Hungary.
I hope you’re feeling the funk, and I want to especially thank Roland And Katalyn for making this possible.

The liveset and beats were made in 1 week, hence the rawness and glitches of the liveset).

No tracktitles

Oh and ofcoarse there are not tracktitles, because the tracks just ‘playfully happened’ in the moment, just like with all good things in live :)

May the funk be with all of you.

CARLA a dream studiorack
2015-05-15T00:00:00+00:00
http://www.leondustar.nl/2015/05/15/carla-a-dream-studiorack

Remember reason? It gives you that feeling of owning gear and patching cables.

Well, after a long software-break, I decided to check out Carla (on Linux).
And I have to say I’m impressed!

Finally a KISS pluginhost with multi-platform plugin-support:

ladspa plugins

lv2 plugins

dssi synth plugins

linux vst plugins

win32 vst plugins

win64 vst plugins

native soundfont support (.sfz .sf2 and .gig)

python rdf

One soft-studio rack

Finally one central place to organize all my soft-gear, my crossplatform wish has been granted!
A portable soft-studio which can be fed midi and audio by anything.

Sequence as you wish

You can use carla as you wish:

as a standalone midi sending/receiving soft-studio (using hardware midi seq)

as a plugin in DAWS

I hope it will somehow support changing patches using midi program change message.
Would be cool to change studiorack setups using your outboard midi gear.

How I plan to use CARLA

Im curious if this tool will make me sit more often in front of a computer.
As stated before in articles, these days I dislike sequencing songs in DAW’s.
I would love to use CARLA as a instrument interface connected to my hardware midi sequencer.
Especially the native soundfont support finally allows me to organize my soundfont instrumentcollection.
We’ll see :)

electribe sx dithering distortion trick
2015-05-01T00:00:00+00:00
http://www.leondustar.nl/2015/05/01/electribe-sx-dithering-distortion-trick

The Korg electribe SX native distortion effect lacks highfrequency content imho.
I accidentally discovered how to add high distortion frequencies: by maximizing the added dithering: normalize a sample played at low volume.
Doing so with the eq-effect will give you still a bit of high- low-band control using the fx knobs.

Summary

Just go into sample mode an:

apply an eq fx

set the level around 11-14

resample the sound (shift+record and hit a drumpad)

normalize (shift+ normalize button)

There you go, dither dirt is added!

pre-echo beats
2013-12-29T00:00:00+00:00
http://www.leondustar.nl/2013/12/29/pre-echo-beats

There’s something about mp3 what I like, and many others don’t like: transientsmear. When drums are compressed with (lofi) mp3, pre-echo’s are introduced. I like that. (I dont like the dynamics-loss of the transients, but I like pre-echo’s).

Why I like pre-echo’s

Pre-echo’s, especially on drums give smooth transients, instead of harsh transient. I call it ‘fluffy beats’. Ever listened to 60/70’s music? I love the sound of audiotransformers in old mixingdesks. Audiotransformers usually (depending on the type) introduce transientleakage/smear too. However, the dynamics of the transients are usually better preserved (compared to (lofi) mp3).

Compression is for kids

This is a quote I actually heard the technician of Quincy Jones saying which really made me think.

Compressors, my favourite gem of the past, are known to easily ‘massage’ transients into something else. Nowadays I prefer to use hardware tubes for limiting (JJ tubes on my electribe ESX) and try to stay away from too much pluginstuff, especially compression. Its just so easy to get carried away in nothing. The good news is that I learned to apply, make, and use compressors fairly well thruout the years. However for many other things, layering transient(samples) can phatten things up much easier.

My search for pre-echo’s

I tried many pre-echo plugins, phase vocoders and other fft plugins hunting for the ‘pre-echo’ on drums. I even wrote my own plugins, and fiddled with phasevocoder-sourcecode. All of them suffered the same problem: pre-echo loss of dynamics of the transient itself. I tried many things, mixing them with the origin signal etc. However this lead to many other problems I will not get into.

The solution: the shaker

Sometimes solutions can be found in places where you least expect it.
The solution was quite simple (ofcoarse). Instead of processing everything and losing things in the process, I decided to things myself. The solution was a simple reversed shaker sound :D

The reversed shaker sound used as a pre-echo on my electribe does the job perfectly..it introduces the pre-echo, and the drumsounds maintain their punchy transient.

Example: without pre-echo

The beats above contain clean transients, which can be usefull for goa/psy stuff e.g. (which typically sounds direct, clean and sterile).

Example: The fluffy reversed shaker

Above are reversed shakers (somewhat modified). Basically this is a fadein of pinknoise, which sounds similar to the pre-echo / smooth transients you would hear on badquality mp3.

Example: mixed together

Here the two are mixed together. It might not be very visible for the naked eye, but using this technique I could come up with some really interesting results. Snappy transients and smooth pre-echo’s :)

hardware sampler tricks
2013-11-21T00:00:00+00:00
http://www.leondustar.nl/2013/11/21/hardware-sampler-tricks

Ok since Im a sucker for oldschool hardware samplers and limitations, here are some tips which will work on the electribe esx sampler, but probably as well on other samplers.

Some of the tips here are borrowed from forums, youtube etc.

Stay away from the computer

Try to minimize your computerusage, especially internet and plugins can trigger your monkeybrains. If you want to create music walk to your sampler, accept the limitations and trigger your creative mind.

If you want to create samples walk to your computer.

Use multishots

Instead of going for the traditional 1 sample per sampleslot, go for x samples per sampleslot.
Suppose you have a nice beat playing which use 4 samples (kick/snare/closed hihat/open hihat):

Resample your loop to a new sample

sequence that sample using different sample offsets

free up the other 4 samples

If you get the hang of it, you could go crazy using this linux tool.
This will open a whole new world of sequencing-possibilities.

Save samplespace by pitching up

Pitch up sounds to save samplespace, and pitch them down on your sampler for normal playback. There are up/downsides to this approach. For every sample you create on your laptop, always create 2 versions when preparing samples (the original and the uppitched sample).

credit: carillonaudio

Use proper tools

Instead of covering commercial tools, I will only free tools which I think are suitable for audio production.

Some samplers only work with particular wav-files. Use sox-utilities (windows/linux) to easily convert them to the proper bitrate/mono etc settings.
A tool like Audacity can also do this in a more visual way.

Wavosaur is also a nice sampleprecise editor, especially for embedding looppoints in .wav files. See the electribrary for nice sampler tools.

Cut tight sounds by downpitching

Pitch down the sound before you attempt to truncate your start- of endpoint of your sample. It will allow you to hear the transients much easier.
Just trigger the sample and adjust the position until you really hear the transient playing
exactly
when you trigger the button.

Automate your media-management

This might be easier or mac and linux.
Samplers were designed to keep you away from tradition computer filemanagement.
Therefore, it can be handy to automate any kind of filemanagement actions.

Example: I have a folder ‘write-to-smartmediacard’ on my laptop. When I put new wavfiles in there, and I connect my smartmediacardreader, it automatically copies them. Put in card laptop, pull out, put in sampler, done. For linux use udev-autorun, for windows use autorun.inf, for apple use applescript or something.

hybrid setup
2013-10-25T00:00:00+00:00
http://www.leondustar.nl/2013/10/25/hybrid-setup

I’m familiar with DAW’s, but I’ve always worked with hybrid hardware/software setups. A while ago, I switched to this setup to keep musicproduction interesting and nonlinear: the korg electribe esx the tx16wx software sampler.

Usually, with hybrid setups swapping information becomes cumbersome, except in this particular setup. This setup is awesome imho, because it solves that problem by connecting both midi- and audio in/outputs with eachother. That causes the workflow to be very simple and fast.

Simple demo

The basic idea

In the following picture you can see how this setup connects a fast hardware workflow, with a optional world of digital multi-outputs and optional pluginprocessing.

The electribe esx keyboard-parts do output polyphonic notes (when playing notes manually), so no need for an extra midi keyboard to control your vst(sampler)plugin(s). It also quantizes notes on the fly which i think is nice to have.

Resampling like a madman is the key in this setup:

Conclusion

Samplers will always be easy opensource environments for audio. Audio will never die as a dataformat, so the power of re-sampling is something which can be easily forgotten in this software-era.

Here’s a djset which I planned to upload for a while, but couldnt find the time (and the file on my harddisk hehe). It was liverecorded at a gig in Holland, and there’s a lot of funkyness going on. First part is pretty funky/jacking-ish, and the other half is one big megamix of tunes I like.

new electribe esx
2013-03-04T00:00:00+00:00
http://www.leondustar.nl/2013/03/04/new-electribe-esx

The package has arrived! A new old korg electribe esx with JJ tubes. What a beast! Next liveset will be done with this great tool. Actually I’m quite surprised, its pretty well suited for quick soundengineering as well (easy sampling back an forth from/to PC, and easy handon effects). Big ups for Korg!

thinking about esx
2012-12-02T00:00:00+00:00
http://www.leondustar.nl/2012/12/02/thinking-about-esx

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about purchasing an instrument which promotes easy, idiotproof liveperformances.

Since I’ve done many liveperformances in many ways, these are my requirements (watch out, its big hehe):

portable, all-in-one device

ability to load .wav samples

hasslefree, static latency of max 16 ms

ability to load samples

solid, no-plastic-chassis

(midi)cables should not be able to harm the performance.

static controller-to-engine-to-audiointerface routing.

it should stimulate muscle memory, and reduce errors/stress .

hq soundinterface, groundloop shielded (excludes most laptop internal soundcards, they introduce hums)

ability to tweak note-sequences in realtime

hp / lp filter delay effect

swing-effect (all my tracks need it)

ability to easily cooperate/sample other musicians (microphone/line-in)

simple, widely adapted storage-media

syncs to midi (so I can also use it with my DAW)

ability to connect to audiovisual interactive installation (midi-out)

simple (crossplatform/opensource) software, but also runs standalone.

Why all these requirements?

Its time to bring back the fun! :) I had a lot of fun, yet troublesome livesituations. I always took an extra CD with me, so I could always press play if things went wrong.

The conclusion is that I’ve never really trusted my livesetups. I want to go back to the feeling when I was playing in bands…arrive, plug-in, and play! :)

Until now, every electronic & software setup started with enthousiasm, but in practice it turned out to be tiresome/stressfull. I want to go back to one instrument, regardless if I loose some ‘computingpower’. This isnt in any case a software vs hardware-article, but more of a personal comfortability-pursuit. If you have a laptoplivesetup which is running fine, perfect! :)

Results

Winner: Korg ESX1-SD, its a nice combination between samplesequencing, soundquality, latency and live-possibilities. You can alter everything in realtime (even notes). It lacks long samplesupport, but I can work my way around it (line-in: ipod or minikp for livelooping). It has been my observation that the latest grooveboxes ( Maschine, rhyzome, etc) :

are not opensource, or dont run on linux

are not standalone (cannot use without computer), which creates space for ‘weakest-link’-stress: latency,software,soundinterface,operatingsystem-issues.

imho its popularity is mostly because of their software (sounds/instruments), great for beginners or people who just like the workflow.

Also I’ve looked at the machinedrum,octatrack,OP-1, and they lack in these fields imho:

it can do too much, like a DAW, so the interface becomes too clunky.

Looking at some youtube performances, it seems that the longer the samples, the less playfull the liveset becomes. Its more like you are watching a djset..without CD’s/USB-stick.

its looks/shape/interface is not really handy/appealing to me to bring to a stage imho.

Last but not least I asked some friends who use laptops with controllers on stage, and these are the downsides they reported:

it can be stressfull to arrive on stage, and install laptop, soundinterface and controllers while a dj is playing.

unexpected operatingsystem/applicationbehaviour (abort playing audio).

no musclememory, because midimappings always change (because humans are always seduced to create the ultimate midimapping)

latency can change due recent modifications or recently installed software.

Its not easy/fun working with the mouse when excited, or looking at the screen when you are drunk.

lot of people are giving up on this, since the pioneer CDJ’s with usb-sticks recordbox are kind of replacing it.

Electribe ESX2

I was thinking about waiting for this one. But my research has shown that its not very likely this will happen. In november 2012 Korg would do a big announcement. Unfortunately there was nothing about a new Electribe. Personally I think the SD- and adapter-upgrade will be the last improvement for the electribe. I’ve talked to many people, and its very obvious that the big brands (Roland/Korg/etc) are focusing on products which reduce costs by connecting to a computer using USB or a pluginhost. Its too expensive to create custom hardware/software standalone solutions anymore. Who knows this will be back in 5-7 years when this 2nd wave software-revolution is over..

UPDATE: in may 2015 it happened. The ES2 is here.

Last of mohicans

I’ve looked around for all latest grooveboxsamplers (Roland MCx0x’s, RS7000, maschine, machinedrum, octatrack, rhyzome, mpc’s). But to me it seems the korg ESX1-SD is one of the last small, standalone, portable approaches to live groovebox-samplesequencing for its price.

To me it seems definately worth to get one, because soon they will be gone in the stores.

Commitment to one workflow

If there’s anything I’ve learned from the past, its that a single workflow is key for making livesets. The more things I added (software- or cable-wise), the more obstacles could occur. I predict that in the future my monkeymind will start searching for an ‘another’ ultimate livetoy, but then I should remember this article. I should make a total commitment to one device, and totally streamline that workflow.

ESX Limitations

I was thinking..the ESX has only around 281 seconds of samplememory..how bad are these limitations actually?
I think I should accept this memorylimit as a challenge. I’ve used an akai s01 sampler back in the days, and looking back to it…I could still make funky music with that setup. Also, I’ve used my yamaha rm1x for ages now, and how ugly the sounds are, the limits still push me into some kind of ‘survival’-mode which still results in interesting loops which can be integrated in my DAW. Sometimes its more fun to fight with limitations, then to ‘think’ about infinite possibilities (DAW).
I guess this is what people mean with ‘the freedom of limitations’.

So, I bet the ESX limitations can have its benefits too concerning my creative mindset. Evidence for this can be found looking at the gifted <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/danieklerr?feature=watch\"" title="\"\"">Danieklerr.

Conclusion

Im confident that, with the right preparation/preproduction of samples, one doesnt need more then one ESX.

In the end its just soundwaves coming out of the speaker, and those ones you can prepare using your DAW / software applications.

UPDATE 2015: The ESX and a DAW masterchain is all I need to have fun :)

moving studio!

http://www.leondustar.nl/2012/04/14/moving-studio

Currently Im moving my studio to Budapest by postmail. Im really excited since I put all my stuff into big boxes. This is the first time and I really can’t wait to get my studio up and running here :)

Im in the middle of my albummaking so I hope I can continue this soon :)

UPDATE: it seems my yamaha rm1x suffered some damage. Lesson learned: never send gear by mail, even if its insured and packed well. Not worth it.

buze tracker studio
2012-01-15T00:00:00+00:00
http://www.leondustar.nl/2012/01/15/buze-tracker-studio

Buze really bridges the gap between external midi hardware, software studio & scripting & templating workflows. Buze ftw!

Today I build a temporary studio, and hooked some external midicontrollers & synths to Buze. Im really amazed how well this integrates with Buze’s tracker/plugin approach. Its a ‘studio in AND outside the box’ if you ask me :) I tweaked some of the scripts which were shipped with buze (yes the whole midi/audio engine is scriptable). Its amazingly fun, I can just click one plugin..and my script will map all important parameters to my midicontroller.

This is one of the most well-integrated setup ever in my life. (In the past I was 100% midi hardware, and later on 100% software, and now these 2 can complement eachothers like they’ve never done before). Great stuff.

buze mixer
2011-12-23T00:00:00+00:00
http://www.leondustar.nl/2011/12/23/buze-mixer

Lately I realized it: I have a dreamstudio.

I’ve been really satisfied with my dreamsetup: <a href="http://batman.no/buze/\"" title="\"\"">Buze (a modular multiplugin-DAW), and <a href="http://buzzmachines.com/machineinfo.php?id=921\"" title="\"\"">LD Mixer (a modular multi-in/out mixer plugin).

Since this software is free, I want to give something back: my mixer skin!

Well..’my’ is a big word, I modified okapi/moon.god’s skin :D

[

Logic/Ableton/Cubase workflow in buze?

This is why I like buze. It already has the flexible multi-input/output routing, native controller plugins & Ableton-like envelopes in the pattern editor. Together with this mixer its the bomb. Read more about buze here.

Why is this mixer so great?

Its very modular and flexible..you can freely assign zillions inputs/outputs to any aux/channel/group. Finally something which comes close to an Ableton/Logic/Cubase-mixer. Luckily, this time the mixer can also benefit from the possibilities of a modulair DAW.

ny compression hack
2011-05-22T00:00:00+00:00
http://www.leondustar.nl/2011/05/22/ny-compression-hack

In all my music, I like to apply NewYork Compression to phatten things up. However, I always do this with software plugins. I always dreamed of a simple hardware NY compression-device but I’ve never seen one.
This would make a huge improvement on the sounds coming from YAMAHA hardware devices (which always sound very sterile and clean). An example would be all the good’old hardware grooveboxes out there, like my RM1X.

Get yourself a budget pedal compressor

So..I decided to create it..well..with the help of Behringer CS100. I figured, all I need is a dry/wet fader to make it happen. So instead of making a compressor myself (which I could really never do), I needed a starting point. I managed to buy a Behringer CS100 guitar compressor pedal around 15 dollars.

With some hints from Zephod (creator of blok modular), I did some amazing discoveries. I realized that adding a dry/wet fader on a guitar pedal is really easy! You only have to find out where the connections for the in/outputs are!

Hunting down the magic 3 wires

So, armed with some wires connected to a headphone, and an old potmeter, I started the adventure. Soon I discovered where the little bastards were hiding:

The green wire represents the middle connection for the potmeter. The black and red represent the other connections of the potmeter (doesn’t really matter which one is which, at least, during my research).

Ok, and the black and red wires are connected on the back of the circuitboard.

Now you are ready to go!

Now find yourself a potmeter and you have a dry/wet fader on your gear!
Great inexpensive way to add some NewYork flavor to your hardware gear right?

diy breakoutbox
2011-05-22T00:00:00+00:00
http://www.leondustar.nl/2011/05/22/diy-breakoutbox

Every men has an urge to ‘fix’ or ‘make’ stuff. Some men have it with their car, some with their house, some in their garden, and..ofcoarse some with their computer.
Here’s what I just NEEDED tot make urgently:

As you can see it has a jack-in, and XLR-in connector, which is connected to my EMU0404 PCI soundcard. Now I can just plugin instruments after years of doing a special ‘snake’ exercise behind my computer.

A breakoutbox in 2011?

Yes, even with all the great nowadays USB soundinterfaces. Because when you have a desktopsystem which is really a winnersystem: protect it.
I refuse to change a winning team, I will explain why:

Years ago, I read an interview with Michael Cretu (great producer), where he stated he was using really outdated software and hardware. His motivation was ‘never change a winning team’.

Never change a winning team

So here you have a producer who gets admired and interviewed by boys with all the latest toys, But the reality is, it are not the toys, its the person behind the toys.
Ok that was Michael, so..back to me:

I started making digital music in ‘94 with amiga’s, PC’s and some midi hardware.
The road to where I am now, has been cluttered with bad-latency soundinterface experiences. Sometimes it was the hardware, or driver, or operating system.
Also, sometimes upgrading one thing/OS/soundcard, triggers a whole chain of other incompatiblity terror.
Conclusion: if you have a setup that works: KEEP IT (and make music).

This track was specially made to make crowds enjoy some funky scratching, with some nice fast beats. Long time a go I was very much into turntablism. My hero was the dutch scratch champion DJ Kypski. I was fortunate enough to learn some tricks of the trade from him). Anyways, I decided to get my dusty scratchrecords, and started recording some scratches. Had some great fun on this one!

http://www.leondustar.nl/2011/01/14/videomapping

As an extention of my usual funky stuff, I had the priviledge to do the audiodesign, together with batsboy, for a videomapping-project directed by artist-collective ‘Born Digital’. For months we worked together with vj’s, 3dartists, directors, writers and other artist to come up with a crazy audiovisual-synced exposition.

Also..batsboy is a really great person to work with. I cannot tell too much about this person because I cannot reveil his real identity here.
It was held in Utrecht near the big tower called ‘De Dom’.

5minute cake!

How would you impress your beloved friends, artists, and/or businessrelations?
Would you show him your latest tracks? Your new underpants?
Thats nothing! Nothing..compared to this:

The 5 minute cake!

How confident would you feel if you could make your friend a cake in 5 mins?
Imagine, how you could impress him/her with your feminine side?

The 5 minute cake!

How can you do this? Very simple..together with a friend I discovered a great 1 dollar all-in-one package in the supermarket:

Get started!

Put 30ml milk, 30ml oil, and 1 egg together with the powder. Put it 5 mins in the microwave and tell your friend to close his/her eyes. (yes you read it:microwave..not over..crazy isn’t it?)

Done deal!

Tell your friend to open his/her eyes and prepare to see her/him crying tears of joy!

Conclusion

This is really the strangest instant microwave product I’ve ever seen :)

new midicontroller!

http://www.leondustar.nl/2011/01/12/new-midicontroller

whoohoo finally my midicontroller is here. This baby will be my ultimate tool while making livesets. For the people who are not familiar with this stuff: with this i make/design my own funkmusicspaceship for live usage. Instead of using conventional dj turntables, i try to really ‘make’ my own music in the moment. I needed lots of sliders to do what i want to do..only thing left to do is lots of configuration!

buzz evangelism
2011-01-12T00:00:00+00:00
http://www.leondustar.nl/2011/01/12/buzz-evangelism

Once in a while we have to do a bit of software evangelism. For productions we like many software: Cubase, Wavelab, plugins and also Buzz.

Buzz is the first modular digital audio environment, which developed a pluginformat even before Steinberg came up with the wonderfull VST format.

Its more friendly on the CPU then the commercial DAW’s like Ableton/Cubase (you can use more plugs), against the price of the userface being less fancy.
Every task is ergonomically facilitated by a keyboardshortcut, so you can lay back with your keyboard, and compose tracks!

Check out more about the influence of Buzz on the digital music production scene in this great article here.

Born Digital operates as an art assembly of electronic media artists.

Its different roots trace back to the early nineties. Producing electronic music and visuals have been daytime activities for most of the five

initiators since the early Internet era. The fruits of their work have

always been spread and shared by digital networks.

Born Digital originally existed of five independent production companies and art labels. In the summer of 2008 all came together in one foundation for New Media & New Creativity.

In november 2009 Born Digital organized a weekend of new media art exhibitions, presentations and performances as part of the Kultursonntage Niemandsland. During this weekend Utrecht celebrated the fall of the Berlin Wall, now 20 years ago. This video contains a summary of the events, with a variety of artists showcasing ‘Utrecht meets Berlin’.

Last week I discovered a nice track ‘grumpli’ by Luca M. Really like this simple but yet very-yes-pounding bassline! Together with the chopped up vocal sample, it makes a perfect funkgroove. Cannot sit still on this one!

PRODUCER

Leon started playing piano when he was 8 years old.
Already fascinated by synthesizers, he started messing with tapes and microphones.
In 1994 He made his first productions using demoscene trackers on the PC and Amiga.
In 2009 he finished building his first ‘studio’: an akai s01 sampler, a yamaha rm1x and PC running jeskola buzz (forerunner of VST technology).

His first release was ‘filterdisco revival’ on a US label Control / Re-freshing recordings ran by Kyle Pound and Brian Jones.
